Go Away, Zombie!

The next morning, Tobias was completely exhausted. He almost fell asleep at the table.

“Oh boy,” dad said. “You don’t look good.”

Tobias just nodded. He moved the spoon slowly to his mouth. He tried to think about eating. But there was only room for one thought in his head. He wanted the zombie to go away and never, ever come back.

He got a new idea.

“What do you want to do today, sweetheart?” his mom asked.

“I’m going to the library,” Tobias answered.

“Oh, yes,” his mom said. She sounded happy. He did not usually go to the library. “Do you have a special book in mind?”

“No,” Tobias said. But, then he thought it sounded a little weird. “Well, maybe something about cats.”

“Something about cats?” his mom sounded surprised.

“Yes, maybe.” He thought about it a little. “Or about zombies.”

“Well, those are two good themes,” she said. She went back to reading the paper.

Tobias asked a man for help when he got to the library. He wanted a book about zombies and ghosts. Preferably something about how to make them go away. The man scratched his beard. He thought about it for a long time. Then he typed something into a website. Finally, he found the right book. They had to go to the basement to find it. It was not a popular book, it seemed.

Tobias walked home slowly. He carried the book under his arm. He thought about the cat’s grave. He could sit there.

He walked through the cemetery. It was not so bad during the day, when it was still light outside. There was an old woman by one of the graves. She wore a long, brown coat even though it was pretty hot. She looked directly at Tobias.

“The dead are always here,” she said.

Tobias stared at her. What is that supposed to mean?

“They’re in our thoughts. They’re always with us,” the woman said. She turned around again.

Tobias walked on. His body felt stiff. Calm down, he said to himself. It was just an old woman. She meant nothing by it.

He sat down next to the cat’s headstone. He sighed. He had to get rid of that zombie. Now he was even scared of old women. She meant nothing by it. He was the crazy one.

He opened the book. There was a lot about ghosts. Not as much about zombies. And nothing about cats. Oh, well, he thought. It must be the same. You had to look directly at it and ask it to go away. Or, order it to leave. Hmm. That sounded easy. He could do that.

Tobias was so tired; he almost fell asleep during dinner. He could barely keep his eyes open. Maybe I won’t even hear the ghost tonight, he thought. Maybe I will just fall asleep. But, it did not turn out that way. No matter how tired he was, he was wide awake when he got to his room. As soon as he got into the bed, he could not sleep. Even though he had just been asleep on the couch.
